Don’t get me wrong…I liked school when I was a kid. And I was good at it. But nothing I experienced back then can even compare to what is out there now on the Internet for someone who wants to learn something new. I know education in general, and higher education in particular has taken quite a bashing lately for low performance, lack of innovation and slow change in response to the world as it is today. Some of it is deserved, and some of it has sparked real change. But we still have a long way to go to make it right – for students and for those of us who teach.
Sir Ken Robinson is one of my favorite TED speakers – his message rings true through the many levels of our educational systems today. Hopefully someday we’ll drop the idea that standardized tests are all important and get back to the human side of creative and meaningful learning.
